They were hanged; they were hanged, drawn and quartered; they were hanged in chains; they were hanged by the cords of their habits. They died in prison. They died in battle. They were chased off roofs, cast from castle battlements, guillotined, shot, axed, drowned, impaled, disemboweled, dismembered, poisoned, grilled, roasted, racked, lowered into boiling pitch, made to die of exposure. Their brains were knocked out. They were thrown, hilariously enough, to "the beasts."
