Maybe you'll see it later on the news today, after you wake up for a very late ham and eggs and wonder where I am, why I am not with you. The plane that went down. From where I am, ice covers the Chesapeake Bay like a quilt. I take an unexpected amount of pleasure watching the Harbor Patrol hack at it with their axes, around the tail-fin. It's exciting. I just sit on the side of the rescue boat, my flippers in the water and watch them split ice into the air. It's ten-thirty and I haven't seen any geese all morning. I don't think I've ever seen a winter as cold as this, too cold for birds.
