The Bet
Robert Laughlin

While walking down the street,
Two friends debated how
The human race would meet
Its end, if it came now.

"A natural event."
"You're wrong -- an act of war."
They pledged their monthly rent,
Then hearkened to a roar.

A wall beyond the flash,
An uncharred silhouette:
A man disbursing cash,
The other won the bet.
